HAWAII — B.C.’s defending Triple A high school football champions had a simple message Saturday night.
“That was the best varsity team we have ever played,” said Mt. Douglas Rams head coach Mark Townsend, echoing the sentiments of his players and coaching staff after suffering a 28-0 blanking in Maui at the hands of host Lahainaluna.
“The effort was there, but we lacked execution offensively in key moments in the game,” continued Townsend, whose team trailed 14-0 at half, and gave up two more touchdowns in the third quarter en route to the loss. “Our early-season rustiness showed in some areas but their defensive front was outstanding.”
Marcus Davis led the Rams with 11 carries for 84 yards, and two catches for 34 more the speedster’s reputation has clearly followed him to the islands. Lahainaluna consistently kicked away from Davis throughout the contest. Running back Julian Luis and quarterback Ashton McKinnon each rushed for 52 yards, the host defence stifling the passing game to the tune of just 81 yards on five completions while forcing two turnovers.
The Mt. Douglas defence played well against a superior foe. Defensive tackle Christian Krause led the Rams with nine tackles, while Luis added five and registered two sacks. Defensive back Alec Wong had six tackles and end James Nicholas four and a fumble recovery.
